I was playing pool with some friends a while back, and one of them went to get a drink. A college kid bumped into my buddy, and then got snarky with him for “not watching where he was going.” He came back to the table, talking about challenging the guy. I grinned and said, “Well. Aren’t you the macho puppet?”

Choose Again

“The One Commandment”
(Originally published in August, 2003)

I looked in the mirror a few weeks ago, and it suddenly hit me: I was bored.

Not with my work or my life. With myself. I’d been doing the same things, wearing the same clothing and hair style, listening to the same music and going to the same types of places for over 20 years.

That created a certain comfortable consistency, to be sure. It has a dangerous downside, though. Before I even had a chance to think about that, something flashed through my mind. It’s a quote from a story I read a few years back.

The story took two longish books to tell. I’ll try to condense it a bit.
